Interested in certification? Then you’ve probably heard of CompTIA certifications and its. What is the value of CompTIA certifications? The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) is essentially a member organization that promotes the skills and standards in the IT industry. Like most CompTIA literature states, “CompTIA is a trade association that represents the interests of global companies in the field of information technology.”
While CompTIA provides research, networking and partnership opportunities for its members worldwide, is the area of CompTIA certification that attracts more attention from IT professionals. Through certification programs, vendor-neutral CompTIA develops standards to guide human resources professionals in the IT industry.
The concept of development vendor neutral benchmark is based on the recognition that technology lasts much longer than the suppliers’ products. And a strong technological foundation vendor-neutral will always help professionals in the world, multi-vendor today. Indeed sponsor vendor certifications recognize this vision by building in vendor-neutral CompTIA certifications into their certification paths.
In assessing value and certifications, which CompTIA certifications stand out?
A + is one of the most popular certifications in the IT industry and is CompTIA maximum. A + is extremely popular all over the world, as it validates the skills and knowledge of technical support that covers skills compared to products from leading manufacturers such as IBM, Intel, Microsoft, HP and Lotus. It confirms the competence of individuals with at least 500 hours of practical experience in the IT services sector. Records indicate that over 500,000 people have received A + certification.
While the programs prescribed certification developed by Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Cisco, Novell and Certiport recognize all A +. For example, with A + Certification Network + or CompTIA Server + certification or can be used as an elective for Microsoft’s MCSA certification.
You become A + certified to pass two exams – Exam A + Core Hardware and A + OS Technologies exam. A + was updated in 2001 and again in 2003, today A + Candidates can mix and match the examinations in 2001 and 2003 for the CompTIA A + certification. However, the trial period ends Mix and Match 30 September 2004.
It ‘easy to see why A + is so popular. The exams cover the key areas of technical support, one of the busiest areas of IT: installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. In addition, A + offers newcomers the opportunity to acquire the basic hardware and solid software skills that are valued for entry-level jobs.
Network + is the second largest of CompTIA A + behind in terms of interest and the number of certified individuals. Interested in acquiring and validating or basic networking skills and knowledge? Then you should consider Network +. CompTIA Network + recommended for IT professionals with nine months experience in network support or administration and, unlike the A +, which is obtained by passing an examination of conventional size.
“A Network + certification demonstrates your technical skills in network management and support, and validates your knowledge of media and topologies, protocols and standards, network implementation and network support.”
The dynamic nature of the world, networking is evident for all to see. In the big world of multi-vendor network systems, products and manufacturers, Network + gives the individual a solid foundation vendor-neutral growth and success in any of these areas of networking. And ‘certainly the most popular certification designed to validate the knowledge and skills in the fundamentals of networking.
Microsoft, Novell, Cisco, Compaq, Lotus and 3Com have all recognized Network + as part of their certification tracks.
Network + was introduced in 1997 and updated in January 2002. Although there are no prerequisites for this certification, CompTIA recommends to possess the A + certification. As industry trends indicate higher growth and developments in the network, Network + is expected to continue to grow in value.
Companies and organizations are accepting the fact that project management has its own qualifications and skills. There is a growing need to avoid waste and reduce the risks associated with IT projects. “CompTIA Project + certification is the first sector of the IT project management to be designed by IT people for IT people.”
IT Project + certification is a vendor-neutral credential recognized globally for IT project management. IT Project + was transferred to the Institute of CompTIA Gartner in February 2001, and updated in November 2003.
IT Project + designation is obtained by passing an examination covering the conventional format of “best practice methods and processes of project management, enterprise knowledge interpersonal skills essential and important.” Given the interactive nature of communication and project management, IT project + focuses on people skills more than the usual technical certification programs. Social skills are a function of “conflict resolution, negotiation, communication, teamwork / leadership, and setting and mapping expectations.”
IT Project + has no prerequisites and is recommended for those with at least 12 months of practical experience in project management. It is also a prerequisite for MCNE Novell certification.
IT Project + is a program that should grow in importance given the award given to the social and management skills in the IT industry.
Linux is here to stay. Linux has been proven in the field of the server and is gaining important in the desktop market. Linux + certification is designed for professionals to install, configure, manage and troubleshoot networks, desktops and servers running Linux. “The Linux + certification validates technical competency and provides a wide knowledge of the Linux operating systems. Holders Linux + certification demonstrate critical knowledge of installation, operation, management, and troubleshooting.”
Linux + was introduced in September 2001 and recently announced that CompTIA Linux + certification is subject to review at the end of 2004.
“The screening test is designed to exploit the capabilities of Linux for the tasks of today’s work, and to prepare people for success as they train to get certifications and manufacturer specific Linux more advanced and vendor-neutral.”
There are no prerequisites for this certification and is seen as an entry level certification. However, CompTIA recommends to possess the A + and Network + certifications. With a strong demand and growth of Linux, Linux + Certification is a recognized starting point for network and system administrators interested in the experience with Linux. The Linux + designation is obtained by passing an examination conventional format.
The ever-present threat from hackers, viruses, spam and other malware related IT security took the center stage. This in turn intensifies the demand for security professionals. CompTIA Security + Certification seeks to address this need, covering the fundamentals of information security.
Security + Certification is one of the newest CompTIA – introduced in 2002 – and is also one of the most popular. Organizations are realizing that, as safety is not an option, IT staff must be equipped with safety features. Technologies and policies alone are not enough to stop hackers and decrease the costs associated with security incidents. In fact, studies show that human error, technology is not the main cause of security breaches and threats in the workplace.
Security + is recommended for network administrators and security, especially those with two years of experience in networking in the workplace, with particular attention to safety. It is produced by passing an examination covering the conventional understanding of security, such as “communication security, infrastructure security, cryptography, access control, authentication, external attack and operational and organization security.”
To emphasize its importance, Security + is an elective or prerequisite to advanced certifications from Microsoft and IBM. It can also serve as a springboard for more advanced security certifications such as ISC2 CISSP and Cisco CCSP.
Other CompTIA certifications
Other CompTIA certifications may not be as recognized as those listed in this article, but still maintain a great value for those who are interested in the areas covered. These are: + (imaging systems of electronic documents) + (e-commerce), (Home Technology Integrator), + (CTT protocols CDIA + (Certified Technical Trainer), e-Biz HTI + i-Net Internet and Web management and technology), and server + (server support and competition).
CompTIA does not have the marketing dollars Cisco, Novell, Oracle, Sun and Microsoft, because unlike the big players in the market for CompTIA certification have any hardware or software product being sold. But do not be fooled. CompTIA Certification is no pushover in the global market. As shown in this article, CompTIA credentials focus on areas of high market demand and growth. For entry-level certification, CompTIA leads others to follow.
The credibility of the CompTIA certifications is reinforced by the fact that it is a member organization of reliable IT organizations, not just a vendor behind the development of these certifications.
As technology changes updated CompTIA certifications to keep up with the latest technologies and techniques. However, once a person reaches the CompTIA certification, certification will not expire.
